The story of a semi-automatic hand taping machine I designed while at Yazaki Wiring India Ltd. and would become my Final Year Project.

While interning at Yazaki Wiring India Ltd., outside of my assigned projects on cycle-time optimization, I observed a large number of labor working on the monotonous task of manually insulating wire harnesses. I discussed with the management, the cost-benefit of why they didn’t employ existing automations and dedicated the next 8 months to design a machine to solve it. With the aid of mainly AutoCAD, Solidworks and excel, I convinced the management of cost-savings (through lower labor and better ergonomics) to invest in developing a prototype semi-automatic hand insulation machine. I’ve attached a document illustrating the innovation, its test results and projected savings when implemented.

The project earned me a 10-point Grade in my final year project thesis in Mechanical Engineering while at National Institute of Technology, Trichy and the best ‘Paper Presentation Award’ in Mechanical Engineering Conference held at Kongu Engineering College and Karpagam Engineering College in 2014.
